Which tonsils are most commonly removed during a tonsillectomy?

The palatine tonsils are the ones most commonly removed during a tonsillectomy. Normally, tonsils function to prevent infection. However, when the tonsils are frequently infected, physicians may recommend removal of the infected tissues when they do not respond to noninvasive treatment, such as antibiotics.
