Why do pregnant women have an increased need and urge to urinate?

Early in a pregnancy, hormonal changes in the mother make the urge to urinate more frequent and more urgent. Towards the end of a pregnancy, the increased size and weight of the uterus pressing on the bladder reduces its capacity to hold urine, causing an increased need to urinate.
