Why does diabetes cause blindness?

Diabetic retinopathy is the major cause of blindness in the United States among adults ages 20 to 65. The high blood sugar level in diabetes weakens blood vessel walls in the retina and choroids, which increases susceptibility to hemorrhaging, scarring, and retinal detachment.
