Why does the blood loss during labor not cause a problem for the mother?

In a normal delivery, there may be as much as 1 pint (0.473 liters) of blood loss during labor—most during the placental stage. Since the maternal blood volume increased during pregnancy, this blood loss is tolerated without difficulty.
