Injuries or damage to the spinal cord at or above the fifth cervical vertebra eliminates sensation and motor control of the upper and lower limbs, as well as any part of the body below the level of the injury. The paralysis after this high spinal injury is termed quadriplegia. Damage that occurs in the thoracic region of the spinal cord effects motor control of the lower limbs only. The paralysis affects only the lower limbs and is called paraplegia.
