What is embroidery?

Embroidery is a textile art found all over the world in which threads are decoratively sewn on to finished cloth such as wool or silk. Although the eleventh-century textile, The Bayeux Tapestry, is referred to as a tapestry, it is actually an example of embroidery. This 230-foot long masterpiece depicts the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. (For more information, see the chapter on “The Medieval World, c. 400–1300.”)
