The High Renaissance is a name given to the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries during which time Great Masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael were active, along with slightly later northern Italian artists such as Titian, Correggio, and Giorgione. The High Renaissance is widely considered one of the greatest periods in the history of art, and is certainly the most famous period of Italian art. The High Renaissance is not only an Italian phenomenon—Great Masters from Northern Europe include Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein, among others. Besides art, great scientific discoveries were also made during the High Renaissance, including the revolutionary work of Galileo and Johannes Kepler. The High Renaissance was a unique and important period of intellectual, technological, and artistic achievement in European history.
