Who was Camille Claudel?

Camille Claudel (1864–1943) was an artist and sculptor who studied under Auguste Rodin. She led a troubled life, and after working in Rodin’s workshop, began a romantic relationship with the famed sculptor, which was chronicled in a 1988 French film. Although her story is intertwined with Rodin’s, she had a great deal of individual success and her style was very much her own during her mature period. She exhibited her work at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Independents in Paris. Some of her most famous surviving works are The Waltz (1892–1905), a dynamic rendering of a semi-nude couple wrapped in flowing fabric as they dance. Other works include The Implorer (1900) and The Flute Player (1904).
