Star Evolution

Are there stars not on the main sequence?

Yes. Whereas most stars in any given population of stars are on the main sequence—that is, going through the longest equilibrium period of their life cycle—a small percentage of stars in that population are not. This includes pre-main sequence, or “infant” stars, and post-main sequence, or “elderly” stars. Stars change and age throughout their existence.
