How did the Sojourner rover work?

The Sojourner rover, or “Mars buggy,” was a mere one foot high, two feet long, and a foot and a half wide. It rolled out of the Pathfinder spacecraft and was capable of traveling several feet per day on its six wheels. It ran on batteries charged by its solar panels, which converted energy from the Sun into electrical power, and it was controlled remotely by scientists on Earth.
