How far away is the Moon?

On average, the Moon is about 238,000 miles (384,000 kilometers) away from Earth. This value was measured quite accurately by the ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchus, who lived in the second century B.C.E. Today, laser range-finders have been used to measure a very precise value.
