Surface conditions on Mercury are too extreme for liquid water to exist there. However, data from the MESSENGER spacecraft show that large amounts of solid water—that is, ice—exist at the bottoms of deep craters near Mercury’s north and south poles. Permanently shadowed from the Sun, these regions contain enough ice to cover the entire state of Indiana to a depth of twenty feet!
