A few of the many discoveries made with XMM-Newton are the direct detection of matter falling onto black holes; detailed studies of supernovae and other stellar explosions; new observations of white dwarf stars, neutron stars, and quasi-stellar objects; and pioneering observations of gamma-ray bursts.
