One of the earliest well-known solar space telescopes was the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM), which operated from February 1980 to November 1989. More current solar space-based missions include the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), launched in December 1996; Hinode, also known as Solar-B, a joint mission of NASA and the Japanese Space Agency, launched in September 2006; the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), a pair of nearly-identical satellites launched in October 2006 that provide a three-dimensional view of the Sun; and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), launched in February 2010 into geosynchronous orbit over New Mexico.
