What are the possible shapes of the universe?

There are three general categories of possible shapes of the universe: open, flat, and closed. These adjectives refer to the kind of curvature that space has overall. Massive objects cause space to bend and curve; the universe itself is a massive object, so the entire cosmos is curved, too.
