There have been many discoveries made using Herschel: Astronomers have used this far-infrared space telescope to discover huge numbers of dusty, hidden starburst galaxies billions of light-years away from Earth, and also to gain clues as to how these highly energetic systems have affected the aging and evolution of the universe. Studying dusty nebulae around newborn stars, Herschel has also revealed vast amounts of cold water vapor in space that could be the raw material for comets and oceans—in one case, enough water to fill Earth’s oceans more than two thousand times over.
