What does the night sky look like from our vantage point here on Earth?

On a dark and cloudless evening, when viewed with the unaided eye, the night sky is a beautiful sight to behold. A total of about four thousand stars are visible in the northern and southern hemispheres combined, along with many nebulae, star clusters, and even a few nearby galaxies.
