Aside from studying the properties of Mars—primarily its climate, geological history, and its potential to support life as we know it—Mars Odyssey has been very important in the search for appropriate landing sites for future Mars exploration missions. It also has a powerful communications array, and it continues to serve as an important communications relay station between controllers on Earth and rovers on the surface of Mars.
