What is a blue giant?

A blue giant is the name for a star that is, as its name suggests, big and blue. Such stars are usually high-mass stars on the main sequence. Blue giants live for only a million years or so, glowing a million times brighter than the Sun before they blow apart in titanic supernova explosions.
