What is a color-magnitude diagram?

A color-magnitude diagram is a type of Hertzsprung-Russell diagram that plots the apparent magnitude of stars on the vertical axis and the color of those same stars on the horizontal axis. They are particularly useful for studying populations of stars in clusters.
