What is a field galaxy?

A field galaxy usually refers to a galaxy that has few or no neighboring galaxies. Many field galaxies are actually members of small groups of galaxies, but no field galaxies are parts of rich clusters of galaxies. The vast majority—about 90 percent—of all galaxies in the universe are considered by astronomers to be field galaxies.
