What is a kiloparsec and a Megaparsec?

A kiloparsec (or kpc for short) is one thousand parsecs, and a Megaparsec (or Mpc for short) is one million parsecs. For reference, the typical separation between stars in the disk of the Milky Way galaxy is about a few parsecs; the diameter of the disk of the Milky Way is about 30 kiloparsecs; and the distance between the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy is about 0.7 Megaparsec.
