What is an exoplanet?

An exoplanet, also known as an extrasolar planet, is a planet that is not in our solar system. The first confirmed exoplanet discovery was made in the late 1990s; since then, nearly one thousand exoplanets have been discovered, and the number is increasing at the rate of dozens of new exoplanets per year.
