What was the Luna program?

The Luna program was run by the Soviet Union between 1959 and 1976, with the purpose of exploring the Moon and its surroundings using space probes. A series of twenty-four Luna probes achieved a number of milestones in unpiloted space exploration, including orbiting, photographing, and landing on the Moon.
