Telescope Basics

Who invented the telescope?

Historians think that, in the early 1600s, a Dutch optician named Hans Lippershey (c. 1570–c. 1619) built the first telescope. Many people, however, were converging on this new technology around that time. By 1609, Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) had built at least two telescopes, which he put to use in his study of the universe.
