Being a priest was a huge responsibility. There was a lot to remember. Accordingly, God gave the priests extremely detailed instructions on how to carry out their duties, right down to how to dispose of unneeded animal parts. Soon after Aaron and his sons were ordained (Leviticus 9), two of Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, misused their priestly position by using coals from a banned, unspecified source. When they did that, “fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.” (NRSV, Leviticus 9:2)
