Old TestamentThe Pentateuch |
Did Joseph adopt Egyptian ways completely? |
On the surface, it seemed so. However, as the famine continued, Joseph told the Egyptians to trade their livestock in exchange for food from the stockpile. When their livestock was gone, Joseph told them to trade in their land, and then he leased it back to them. Then, accepting the people’s desperate bargain, Joseph “made slaves of them from one end of Egypt to the other.” (NRSV, Genesis 47:21)
