Did Paul and Silas escape?

No. They did not try to escape. The jailer woke up and assumed the prisoners had escaped. He started to kill himself, but Paul shouted at him, “Don’t do that! We’re all still here! Nobody’s run away!” (The Message, Acts 16:28) Amazed and relieved, the jailer exclaimed, “Sirs, what do I have to do to be saved, to really live?” (The Message, Acts 16:30) Paul told the jailer how to believe. Then the jailer called his family to him, and together they were baptized that very night. The next day, the authorities released Paul and Silas.
