Old Testament

The Pentateuch

Did the brothers make it back to Canaan without incident this time?

No. As the brothers prepared for their trip home, no one saw Joseph plant his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. When the brothers were not far from Egypt, Joseph had his steward overtake them and search for the cup. The brothers swore they did not steal it. Of course, Joseph’s cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. Judah, shaken and contrite, was afraid to turn Benjamin over to Joseph. Judah explained to Joseph how important Benjamin was to Jacob: “It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.” (KJV, Genesis 44:31)
