God promised to lead the Israelites as they traveled. How did he do it?

During the day, God appeared to the Israelites as a pillar of cloud. At night, God appeared to them as a pillar of fire. “Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.” (NRSV, Genesis 13:22)
