How did God finally convince Gideon that God would deliver on his promise to be with him if he went up against the Midianites?

God winnowed out Gideon’s troops and sent many of them home. Gideon was left with three hundred men. They were chosen on the basis that they lapped water like a dog. The Midianite troops outnumbered Gideon’s army greatly. So when Gideon and his troops won, it was clear that the victory was due to God’s intervention, not human skill.
