Abraham’s servant went to Aram-naharaim to find a wife for Isaac among their relations. The servant prayed to God, “Let the girl to whom I shall say, ‘Please offer your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac.” (NRSV, Genesis 24:14) It happened just as the servant prayed. Rebekah came out and gave the servant water, and offered to water his camels. After some bargaining with her father, the servant took Rebekah back to Isaac. Isaac loved Rebekah and was comforted after his mother, Sarah, died.
