Old Testament

The Pentateuch

If God expected the Israelites to be holy, does that mean God expected them to be perfect?

God is perfect. The Israelites, like all humans, were not. God knew that and still does. Scholars point out that the word “holy” has a few shades of meaning. God’s holiness separates God from the world. In the Levitical sense, God separates those God wishes to devote to himself. Most scholars agree that God was telling the Israelites to separate themselves from the world by their distinct devotion to his laws.
