At God’s direction, they conducted a census of eleven of the tribes. Primarily, the census was a way to gauge how many soldiers were among the Israelites. Accordingly, only men twenty years old or older were counted. The members of the tribes of Levi were not counted because they were dedicated to being priests—never soldiers.
