Is Ruth’s Moabite heritage important in the story?

Yes. The Moabites were the ancestors of Lot’s incestuous relationship with his oldest daughter. Because Lot was Abraham’s nephew, the Moabites were related distantly to the Israelites. The Moabites, like many of their Canaanite neighbors, worshiped many gods and engaged in human sacrifice. Thus, the Moabites were seen as a snare to the Israelites. So when Ruth arrived in Bethlehem, she was viewed as an outsider.
