Was Jesus really born on December 25? |
Most scholars say no. The custom of celebrating Jesus’ birth was not common until at least the third century C.E., maybe even later. Some scholars think that December 25 was chosen because it was nine months from the time when Mary is believed to have conceived Jesus. The celebration for that event was already being celebrated on March 25. Other scholars think that the December 25 date was selected because it coincided with certain pagan festivals.
