The Bible does not say whether the woman died of the brutal attack, or whether she died on the journey home. Maybe she was dead then; maybe not. What the Bible does say is that when the Levite got home with his concubine, he took a knife and cut her into twelve pieces. He sent one piece to each of the twelve tribes with this message, “Has such a thing ever happened since the day that the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until this day? Consider it, take counsel, and speak out.” (NRSV, Judges 19:30) As far as the other tribes knew, the Levite was blameless in the whole affair. So the Levite was willing to pit the majority of the tribes against the Benjaminites, just so he could have revenge.
