What are the Dead Sea Scrolls?

These are a collection of hundreds of biblical and non-biblical scrolls and scroll fragments found in mountain caves of the Qumran area on the western shore of the Dead Sea. The first discovery, by a teenage Bedouin shepherd, occurred in 1946. That chance discovery sparked more exploration and further discoveries over the next decade.
