What are the Songs of Ascents?

The Songs of Ascents are psalms 120–134. These psalms were designed to be sung without instrumental accompaniment. There are two possible reasons why the word “ascents” is used. “Ascents” might refer to the uphill walk of all pilgrims visiting Jerusalem, or it might refer to climbing the steps of the temple.
