The Philistine army and the Israelite army were positioned for battle. One army camped on one mountain. The other army camped on the opposite mountain. A valley was between the two armies. Goliath challenged the Israelites to send forth their best man to fight him. Saul and the other Israelites were afraid of Goliath. After all, Goliath was an intimidating figure. He was about nine-and-a-half feet tall. He wore a helmet and armor of bronze. His spear was enormous.

Under the protection of God, David slew Goliath and created one of the most famous and beloved stories in the entire Bible. After David killed Goliath, he went on to become amazingly successful in other military campaigns. He became so successful that people came up with a song, “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” That song added fuel to Saul’s dislike of David.
