What did God want the Israelites to do when they met the people who lived in the land where they were going?

God warned the Israelites about being friends with the people they met. God told the Israelites not to make treaties with them or intermarry with them, lest the Israelites succumb to the other people’s idolatrous lifestyles. Instead, God told the Israelites that—with God’s help—they would destroy the other people completely.
