Old Testament

The Pentateuch

What did Joseph dream?

Joseph described the first dream like this: “There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright; then your sheaves gathered around it, and bowed down to my sheaf.” (NRSV, Genesis 37:5–7) In the second dream, “the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” (NRSV, Genesis 37:9). The sheaves and celestial creations were symbolic, but the meaning was pretty clear.
