It was not so much what John saw as what he heard. He heard an angel sing a dirge about the fallen Babylon: “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devil, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” (KJV, Revelation 18:2)
