They lost their patience and their faith. The Israelites said to Aaron, “Come, make us gods who go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.” (NIV, Exodus 32:1) So the Israelites wanted to believe in the God who rescued them from Egypt, but they grew tired waiting to hear from him again. Aaron took jewelry from the Israelites and fashioned a gold calf out of it. Aaron proclaimed, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” (NIV, Exodus 32:4) The next day, the Israelites had a party.
