Around 1827, thirty-year-old Isabella Baumfree had a vision. New to the Christian faith, Baumfree was awed one day to hear Jesus speak to her. He appeared to her in a flash of light, and made it known to her that there was no place where he was not present. After that experience, Baumfree was convinced God wanted her as a missionary to fight for the end of slavery, and for women’s rights. Baumfree believed God wanted her to change her name to fit her new role, so she did change her name—to Sojourner Truth. Not only does Truth’s conversion beg comparison to Paul’s, so too does her famous speech, “Ain’t I A Woman?” and Paul’s “Am I Not Free?” address in I Corinthians 9. Truth was illiterate, but she knew the Bible well.
