The Pentateuch

What happened during the ceremony?

The ceremony involved many steps. First, Aaron and his sons were anointed. This was accomplished when Aaron and his sons lay their hands on a bull’s head and slaughtered it at the entrance to the Tabernacle. Aaron and his sons took some of the bull’s blood and put it on the horns of the altar. The rest of the blood they poured out at the base of the altar. They burned the fat that covered the bull’s entrails, and the bull’s liver and kidneys on the altar. They burned the bull’s flesh, skin, and dung outside the camp as a sin offering.

Then, Aaron and his sons slaughtered a ram and took its blood and dashed it against all sides of the altar. They cut the ram into pieces, washed the pieces, then burned them on the altar as a burnt offering.

After that, Aaron and his sons slaughtered another ram, and took some of the blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and the right ears of his sons. Also, they took some of the blood and put it on Aaron’s right big toe and the right big toes of his sons. They dashed the rest of the blood against all sides of the altar. Once Aaron and his sons were anointed by some of the blood on the altar and some oil, they and their vestments were holy.

Finally, Moses took the fat that covered the ram’s entrails, the ram’s liver and kidneys, and the ram’s right thigh, along with pieces of bread, and put them in the palms of Aaron and his sons. Aaron and his sons raised their palms as an elevation offering. Then they put the offering on the altar and burned it. Moses took the breast of this ram and raised it as an elevation offering to God. Also, the flesh of this ram was boiled. Aaron and his sons ate it, along with some of the apportioned bread.
