Jesus gave new meaning to the Passover meal. Jesus took bread, blessed it, divided it among the apostles, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Then Jesus took a cup of wine, blessed it, divided it among the apostles, and said, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (NRSV, Matthew 26:26, 27) The addition of the word “new” with the word “covenant” in some Bible translations heightens the contrast between the old way of doing these rites under Mosaic law, and the new way of doing things through Jesus. These actions modeled what became a building block for the Christian church—Holy Communion, or Eucharist.
