Apocrypha

What happened to Eleazar the priest when he refused to eat pork?

He was tortured. The king’s guards stripped Eleazar of his clothes and flogged him until his skin was in shreds. Through it all, Eleazar “remained adorned with the gracefulness of his piety.” (IV Maccabees 6:2) Even after the flogging, Eleazar refused to eat pork. So the king’s guards amped up the torture. They “burned him with maliciously contrived instruments, threw him down, and poured stinking liquids into his nostrils.” (NRSV, IV Maccabees 6:27)
