It is not clear at what point this happened in the family history, but at one point, Judah left home and settled near Adullam, a village near Bethlehem. While there, Judah married a Canaanite woman named Shua. Together they had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er married a woman named Tamar, but the LORD put Er to death because he was wicked. Judah said to his next oldest son, Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her; raise up offspring for your brother.” (NRSV, Genesis 38:8)
