What happened to Paul once he got on the island?

Paul and his companions set about to build a fire on the beach. While gathering brushwood, Paul was bitten by a deadly viper. When the people of the island saw that Paul survived a shipwreck only to be bitten by a snake, they figured he must be a murderer who was getting his just desserts. When the people saw that Paul did not suffer ill effects from the bite, they decided he must be a god instead.
